COLLAGE

Project: Deconstruct/Reconstruct. This collage was inspired by the work of Valerie Roybal who produced beautiful montages from scrap materials such as newspapers and wallpaper samples. In my piece here, I have used strips of pages from books, music sheets, postcards and maps to merge together to create a small collage. When constructing this piece, I was able to arrange each component to ensure the colours complimented each other and worked in its aesthetic appeal. (10cm x 10cm)

ILLUSTRATION

Project: Deconstruct/Reconstruct. Inspired by the work of Andy DuCett, I created this illustrative design as part of a collage project. Using vintage holiday postcards, I drew juxtaposed imagery in ordinary situation such as a dinosaur taking over a public market for humour effect by using a fineliner. (10.5cm x 7.5cm per image)

MATHS MAP

Project: Deconstruct/Reconstruct. This particular piece was created by taking a series of maths equations from an old exercise book and organising the components onto a map. This montage is one of several material experiments that I have explored to demonstrate a range of collage techniques by orientating the equations in different arrangements. (20cm x 19cm)

MATHS BOOK

Project: Deconstruct/Reconstruct. To show development in my work, I created several versions of my maths equation montages as presented in this example whereby I continued using maths equations but with varying backgrounds. In this piece, I used the same exercise book that the equations were taken from, but overlay the text on top of original notes which has created a very intriguing effect. (24.5cm x 18.5cm)

SOUNDWAVES

Project: Identity. For our ‘Identity’ project, I approached this topic with a scientific theme whereby in this case one of my ideas was to record the sound waves from my favourite song, ‘Warmth’ by Bastille. I was able to experiment with this recording quite extensively using a variety of materials; as an initial idea I used a sewing machine to embroider the pattern which has worked very effectively. (28cm x 21cm)

SOUNDWAVES 2.0

Project: Identity. In continuation, I developed my sound wave ideas further by using combination of media such as in this instance I used printing ink to create this dynamic and visually aesthetic background to then use acrylic paint to mark out the sound waves based on a template I created myself. Other explorations in this idea included using spray paint, ink and overlaying the sound waves with lyrics to incorporate typographic features to the piece. (34cm x 22cm)

CODES

Project: Identity. The work displayed in this example encompasses two experimental pieces of depicting the theme of identity in a scientific manner through the printing of human DNA code. I was able to source this code from a university student studying forensic anthropology which gave my design a real authenticity to them compared to copying a source from the internet. These examples have been screen printed onto brown packaging paper (left) and white card (right) to explore the various materials used. (42.5cm x 22cm)
